The WHO:
Hello everyone and thank you for taking the time to consider my cause. I am a passionate, enthusiastic, and motivated public school teacher closing out my fifteenth year on the secondary level. I have experienced the absolute best and the absolute worst within the public education sector. I look to take all of my experiences and CELEBRATE EDUCATION and welcome all of you to join. Below you may find my realistic credentials:
· I have a Bachelor’s Degree in English.
· A Master’s Degree in Curriculum Analysis and Development/Instructional Leadership.
· I have successfully lived through a school riot, a student setting fire in my room, parents meeting me at my car or walking into my classroom in the middle of a lecture, and though I did not know at the time, a gun in my classroom that was used toward another student directly after my class.
· The highest passing rate of proficiency tests on site(s).
· Created curriculum that is still in use today.
· Co-created a yearly poetry slam where students perform in front of 400+ of their peers.
· Chaired an Accreditation committee.
· Currently chair my department.
· Have or am currently teaching English 9, English 10, English 11, English 12, Mythology and Folklore, Reading and Writing for Proficiencies, AP Language and Composition, AP Literature and Composition, Vietnamese immigrants how to speak English in order to successfully pass their citizenship test.
· Have been part of committees to edit and rewrite Common Core tests.
· Have taught at six different schools.
· Have raised over $78,000 in scholarships and grants for my students.
· Have made house calls.
· Mentored new teachers and students.
· Saved a foreign exchange student from an abusive host family.
· Successfully created websites, staff development, and cross curricular curriculum for sites.
The WHAT:
I am looking to raise money for a personal project, which when completed, will answer the question: Why are American public schools weakening? Through the platform of documentary I will be orchestrating interviews and testimony from the three highest and three lowest preforming elementary, middle, and high schools in our country. In addition to these interviews I am going to connect public education to today’s top technological companies and education officials. I am not looking to bash, slander, or throw public education into any dark corner. If anything, I would like to show proof of how fantastic our public education system is. THIS IS A POSITIVE PROJECT. JOIN ME IN CELEBRATING EDUCATION!
I will also be making this an interactive type of experience. Daily updates, locations, welcomed questions for interviews, advice, and simple and honest fun in order to show the world how GREAT American public education is.
The HOW:
The money donated will contribute to all of the equipment necessary in order to answer the question. All donations will go to the purchasing of equipment, travel, nutrition, and help maintaining the most simplistic elements of continued life back home. I will be taking a one year sabbatical from teaching in order to accomplish this project.
The HOW SOON:
I am looking to begin travel as soon as possible. I am allotting myself one school year (180 days) to complete this project once fully funded
The WHY:
Within my time teaching I have removed myself from the cliché conversations, angst toward public education, and refused to accept that students cannot learn. I am tired of hearing on the first days of school, “Is it summer yet?” or on Monday, “Is it Friday yet?” I live and breathe education and would like to finally speak out and find where this massive gap is forming. For fifteen years I have been attending trainings, workshops, committee meetings, parent conferences, and staff development and to be honest, it is not enough. Since, theoretically, all schools are capable of achieving great tasks and achievement, I want to do something greater than simply teach the students within my classroom. I want to teach the world what American public education is all about, focusing on the positives and getting to the core of where and why we are not meeting expectations and hopefully helping to resolving the issue of low performance in our schools.
The big THANK YOU:
A simple thank you would not suffice for the amount of gratitude I will be feeling if this dream becomes a reality. Through this project I hope to turn this idea into one where I can travel the world and document the different forms of education and help incorporate them into our standard practices and vice-versa. This is just the first step and with all of your help I will be able to take the next.
