There are estimated to be more than one million Steves in the United States.
So we had an idea:
What if 100,000 of them gave just $1 to help save two horses with extraordinary medical needs?
Welcome to Project Steve.
This campaign began with Steve, a three-year-old horse who came to us through an animal cruelty investigation. It was dark when we picked him up, and we could not fully see the extent of his condition yet. But we knew enough to know that he needed help immediately.
We said yes without hesitation.
Since arriving at sanctuary, it has become increasingly clear just how medically and orthopedically complex Steve truly is. He will require extensive diagnostics, veterinary care, corrective farrier work, rehabilitation, and likely lifelong management... He is just a baby.
And, as if one impossible case was not enough, we are also caring for Sundae — a tiny dwarf miniature horse with severe orthopedic challenges of her own. Sundae arrived covered in lice and parasites, with clear signs of long-term neglect despite her young age.
Her care journey has already included specialty farrier work, repeat radiographs, veterinary consultations, and ongoing evaluation by experts. We are currently exploring surgical options that will involve specialty hospital transport, rehabilitation, and lifelong medical support.
Together, Steve and Sundae represent the reality of sanctuary work:
the hard cases, the expensive cases, the ones who need people willing to stay even when the path forward feels overwhelming. At this point, we expect their medical care alone to exceed $50,000, and because both horses will require lifelong support, that number will continue to grow.
But Project Steve is about more than just two horses. Running a sanctuary requires feed, hay, medications, staffing, fencing, fuel, insurance, utilities, blankets, vehicle maintenance, fly spray, emergency repairs, and countless daily expenses that keep vulnerable animals safe and cared for every day.
So we are calling on the Steves:
- If your name is Steve, this is your moment.
- If you know a Steve, tag them or share this fundraiser.
- If you love a Steve, donate in their honor.
- If you are not a Steve, honorary Steves are welcome.
Somewhere out there is a Steve who can help change these horses’ lives forever.
