PROJECT PHEONIX - Community Pandemic Recovery

Fabwright Origins is a Minority Owned, Boston-based design and manufacturing company that helps creatives do more, using digitally augmented tools and processes. We offer product design and small scale manufacturing of custom home goods, storage solutions, accessories and other custom products. We also offer training in product design and manufacturing for creatives and students. We also offer product and studio photography for small businesses. We are currently looking for funding to outfit our shop with new equipment so that we can provide PPE and clear partitions for local businesses, provide design and manufacturing training and job opportunities for local youth and help local small businesses rebuild from the Coronavirus pandemic.

In response to the pandemic we have shifted a significant portion of our manufacturing capacity to facilitating PPE production. We have been working with fashion shops in Greater Boston to provide them with high quality pre-cut fabric, fabric cutting and product photography services. We’ve also teamed up with local designers and sewists to provide higher sewing capacity for shops that have trouble coping with high volume orders. Using a laser cutting machine, made available by one of our community partners, we have processed more than 200 yards of fabric for 50 mask makers, equivalent to up to 6000 masks and other protective gear, generating up to $75,000 in sales opportunity for local businesses while reducing their production time by 40 to 75%.

As the Coronavirus Pandemic transitions into a recovery phase, we are looking to expand our operations to better provide our communities with urban manufacturing and design services and training. Currently, we’ve been relying on our relationships with community makerspaces for the majority of our digital fabrication. In order for us to produce efficiently, we must bring machinery in-house.  We are looking to install a flexible digital fabrication manufacturing system at our workshop location equipped to process a variety of materials for the fashion, home goods, and art industries. In addition, we are looking to expand our manufacturing output of PPE, in-store partitions and other protective equipment for small businesses.

We’ve carefully selected a collection of machines and tools that will work together to provide our shop with a wide range of manufacturing capabilities.  Our upgraded shop will provide essential design services including CAD modeling and prototyping, sewing pattern creation and grading, and graphic design and illustration. Our facility will also provide low to mid-volume manufacturing services including laser cutting, CNC plotting and machining, woodworking, moldmaking, textile printing and sewing.  We will also expand our relationships with our community partners to provide digital fabrication and design-for-manufacture training for students, creatives and small businesses, including paid summer programs for high school students. In addition, we will provide marketing services including product and studio photography and ad campaigns.

With our upgraded facility, we project we will be able to facilitate the production of tens of thousands of masks per week, face shields, barriers for cash registers and other essential products that businesses and institutions need to reopen more safely. Our shop will allow local creators to increase production capacity, create new revenue streams and custom products and more quickly and efficiently recover from the effects of the pandemic.

Our primary fundraising goal is $50,000 to purchase a new, larger laser cutter.   If we can exceed our goal, we will also provide high quality reusable face masks and other protective gear to be donated to medical personnel, essential businesses and underprivileged communities.

With your support, we will be able to provide our communities and small businesses with the support and resources they need to move forward and grow. Thanks for your support!
