Project Feed a Warrior - Sickle Cell

Happy holidays everyone. Please DONATE and SHARE my GoFundMe campaign for Project Feed a Warrior, an event organized by the Voice of ADESUA Sickle Cell Foundation and supported by my foundation, No One Behind (NOB). The event takes place on December 8th, 2019 in Nigeria.

NOB is a non-profit organization whose mission is to leverage partnerships in underserved communities to make health care accessible to all, leaving No One Behind.

As a person with firsthand experience growing up with a sister with sickle cell disease in Ghana, I cannot stress how important it is for these patients to have access to preventative medications and quality health care.

Project Feed a Warrior aims to provide food items and preventative medications like folic acid and multivitamins to sickle cell patients in need this holiday season. 


Sickle cell patients have red blood cells which are “C” or crescent-shaped (sickled) and can block proper blood flow to organs and tissues. This can lead to episodes of pain, infection, anemia, stroke and other acute and chronic complications.

Unlike normal red blood cells which have a lifespan of about 120 days, sickle cell red blood cells last only about 10-20 days or less and can break down leading to anemia and folate deficiency.

Sickle cell patients are thus recommended to increase folate intake through diet and supplementation to help make new red blood cells and reduce symptoms of anemia. For a sickle cell patient, especially those living in parts of the world where foods are typically not fortified, access to folic acid supplementation along with other preventative medicines can be lifesaving.

During this event, patients will receive food items like sweet potatoes, beet roots, brown rice, canned tomatoes, honey, ginger, groundnut oil, beans and many others. Medications to be provided include Folic Acid, B-complex, Paludrin and Paracetamol.  NOB will be providing a medication education brochure for all the medications available to the patients at the event.

The event will also provide free genotype testing for the general public and will have medical experts available to provide evidence-based medical education on sickle cell disease and trait.
