EEG machine is critical for our Epilepsy project in Ethiopia. Typically priced over $10,000 we received a generous discount from Micromed, a German company, to purchase the Brain Quick, digital EEG kit that can be mounted on PC for $3,500.  Additional cost will include $890 for Kit cap comb A and $1,000 for tax, logistics and implementation. The package also includes training of technicians as well as warranty which will be facilitated by their branch located in Egypt. This discount is only available to us until 10/30/2019. The total price will be $5,500. The good news is that we have already raised over 50% of our need.  Join us with your financial contribution to meet our goal. Weather you want to sponsor one of the itemized portions, or you want to donate few dollars towards the purchase of the EEG, you will support our mission. Every amount counts!

Every year, many people living with epilepsy in Ethiopia are misdiagnosed and under-treated due to the lack of proper diagnostic equipment. Most of the interventions are dependent on reports from bystanders, which fail to capture the information necessary to appropriately diagnose and treat patients. Very few people have a chance of getting MRI, CAT scan or EEG for the proper diagnosis and intervention of epilepsy. This problem is even worse for people living in poorer communities, who can’t afford medical care.

I recently heard about a 22 years old boy’s heartbreaking story. He was diagnosed with epilepsy as a teenager and treated with anti-seizure medications for years without meaningful success. One day, after a particularly severe seizure that happened years after his initial diagnosis, he finally received a CAT scan. The scan revealed that the cause of the boy’s seizures was not epilepsy, but a brain tumor. Surgery was attempted, but it was too late, and the boy unfortunately passed away.

Stories like these are unfortunately frequent, and CareEpilepsy USA would like to be part of the effort to reduce the number of preventable deaths and injuries due to misdiagnosis and mistreatment of epilepsy. One of our current projects is to purchase an electroencephalogram (EEG) machine to be used by people who can’t afford to pay for this expensive diagnostic test. The project will be self-sustainable and will be carried out by a local  NGO, CareEpilepsy Ethiopia.

This equipment will go a long way to diagnose and monitor medical interventions of people without the means to do so.
