Project Castletown
Donation protected
Castletown needs to be protected from inappropriate use and development, and access secured for the people of North Kildare. These funds will be used by Save Castletown Committee CLG as part of it's Project Castletown to sustain our team and its mission - restore access and parking via M4, reunite the historic Demesne, protect the Green Belt, and to fight for public Rights of Way.
We are a small group of people who have been troubleshooting issues at Castletown since September 2023. Here's a sample of what we have worked on:
- Attending the Ministerial Working Group meetings under two separate Ministers
- Negotiating the protocol used to secure the access for essential vehicles which saw Castletown House and Demesne maintained between October 2023 and December 2024
- Community Feedback Survey, highlighting the balance of opinion within the Community and leading to our proposal for a compromise on the use of Lime Avenue in February 2024. The proposal was not adopted.
- Extensive advocacy on Rights of Way, leveraging the known research from past community groups and uncovering critical new evidence through in-person archive searches
- Compilation of a Book of Evidence surrounding the location of the Old Celbridge-Dublin road through Castletown, and related Rights of Way - this includes all evidence and is a formal collection of documents from all sources (including Community and previous campaigns over the years) plus our own original research
- Formal Deputation to Kildare County Council early 2025, setting out the research on the Riverside Right of Way, which prompted all 7 Municipal District Councillors to write to the Minister asking for recognition of the facts in that matter
- Legal work surrounding Gay's Avenue (i.e. M4 entrance) and other matters at Castletown
- Biodiversity campaigns, including a bat study and report
- We have maintained a media presence to keep the issues highlighted during our campaign
- Social Media - we have a strong social media presence to keep the public informed of our work.
