My youngest brother Brian and his wife Amber were just married in fall of last year. While they are still enjoying newlywed bliss, their road to marriage wasn't exactly...easy. Or in anyway standard. In August of 2015, Amber was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 32 years old. After meeting with her team of doctors to discuss treatment, one of her first questions was "what about babies?" As a medical professional herself, she knew that chemotherapy could cause infertility. While she and Brian were not yet engaged at this point, they knew they wanted to marry each other and raise a family. They met with a fertility specialist in Birmingham, AL who soon retrieved 21 healthy eggs the week before she started chemo. My brother called Amber an “ovary-achiever” and said that those eggs are a symbol of God’s promise that they will be parents someday. Unfortunately, Amber will not be able to carry her own baby due to the type of cancer she had (which is very hormone driven). So, after continued prayer, they have decided to pursue a gestational carrier.
They have found an agency in Charlotte, NC that will match them with a carrier as close to them as possible. The process is very lengthy (average is 16 months from the time the agency is hired to the baby born). Also, as you can imagine, it is also crazy expensive. Insurance does not cover any part of the process, so Brian and Amber will be responsible for all associated expenses (estimated between $75,000-$100,000). They are responsible for the agency fee, carrier fee, IVF for the carrier, all doctor’s visits, travel, etc. To help combat some of the costs, they have applied for grants. As helpful as those would be, it would not be enough to cover the costs of having their own baby.
So...that's where they need your help. They are not the type to ask for help. Hence why I am doing this. They can't bear to ask anyone for help. So here I am. They are a wonderful, caring couple who will make amazing parents. But to get there, they have to face challenges that most of us can't even imagine. If you are inclined to help, please know that your contribution couldn't go towards a more deserving couple.
From the bottom of my heart (and theirs!), thank you for your love, support and constant prayers over the past few years.
