Alma Theatre is proud to present Hagar by Aksam Alyousef in Fringe Festival 2019. And we need your help!
Hagar tells the story of a mother’s decision to make a difficult sea voyage to escape war-torn Aleppo with her young son. We are asking for your support to help us reach our goal of $2000 to cover some of the base costs of the project. Every penny counts and is tremendously appreciated!
Our Story
While Hagar is not based on any one individual’s true story, it incorporates common, painful truths about the human toll of the Syrian refugee crisis into an honest, harrowing narrative. Part of Alyousef’s motivation for writing Hagar was to provide an outlet for audiences to “understand the deep humanity Canada has shown by receiving refugees as human beings, and not as a nuisance or as intruders. It is a thank-you letter to Canadians, and also a portrait of the [situation] that many refugees face.” With over 5,000 Syrian refugees having settled in Alberta from 2015-2017 alone, this international story has very local connections.
Perks, perks, perks!
In appreciation of your generous support, Alma Theatre would be delighted to extend some thank you gifts to our donors. Some perks that are up for grabs include:
Recognition in the lobby display and program
A signed Hagar poster
