Prismagic Radio Hour

2020 was supposed to be IT. The Prismagic circus company has been working tirelessly for the last 7 years putting on shows in The Backyard Theater, performing at The Portland Rose Festival, creating relationships with phenomenal local performers, and saving every penny that we could to both renovate the amphitheater and buy a circus tent to take the show on the road. Well, we got the tent and the garden amphitheater looks great... and then... Covid.

The Corona Virus has essentially decimated the entertainment industry as we've known it. Everything this year has been cancelled. How could we possibly bring you your annual dose of Prismagic without being able to gather under the apple tree?

Petra, one of Prismagic's co-founders, has been wanting to go into film for many years. One of the major influences for this movie was Petra’s love for local radio station Portland Radio Project 99.1. She loves how authentic and candid the hosts are and she even interviewed some of the folks from PRP to get an inside story of how those radio personalities came to be. While live circus performance has always been her passion, there is something quintessentially precious about creating a work of art that an audience can keep and watch over and over. With live entertainment being on the rocks during the Covid-19 experience, making a film became Petra’s only option for sharing her company with the world.

A chance meeting outside the burrito shop with the incredible Zahra Garret solidified these plans. Now, with Zahra as videographer, and Petra as producer and writer, Prismagic is finally making a movie.

The Prismagic Radio Hour is an art film throwback to MTV music video countdowns and pirate radio stations. While in the past we have talked about the undercurrent zeitgeist of our community as a call to action through storytelling,  the last 9 months have pushed the tenor to the forefront. Because of this, our intent with this piece is to give the revolutionaries a space for self care and rest. The film is designed to soothe and inspire hope.

Our project has been accepted to The Fertile Ground Festival. The festival is only accepting video submissions this year and attendance to the shows are free with an option to donate. Because of this, we are running a crowdfunding campaign to raise money to PAY THE STAFF.

Our first and foremost priority is that our staff make a living wage. It's in our mission statement and we stand by that promise to the point where, when a show is poorly attended, Petra & Frank (co founders of Prismagic) forgo their own payment to ensure the success of their staff. It's ideal if we don't have to do that, though!

The money from this Go Fund Me will go here:

$800 - Zahra Garret - videography & editing
$500 - Makenna Carrico - Composer (ALL ORIGINAL MUSIC!!!)

If we meet those goals, the next $640 will go toward renting equipment:
Camera Solutions -
    Camera: Canon XA20: $300/week
    Lav: $121/week
    Mic Kit: $98/week
    Tripod: $121/week

$100 to Petra Delarocha for poster art & like... writing and directing and prop making and costuming and planning and scheduling... and you know, like anything else that needs to be done.

$100 for Fertile Ground Festival registration

$400 for all of these folks: $5,600 total

Gerrin Mitchell - MC
Feral Dance Crew (Party of 6)- Choreography and group dance
Alison Lockfeld - Aerialist
Kristin Schier - Comedian
Circus Luminescence (Party of 3) - Juggling & hooping

So, we are hoping for at least $7,740 and every additional dollar pays the amazing people helping to make this project happen.

We are so thankful for all your support and faith in us. We love serving you and bringing you what you need through the medium of circus arts.
