Print2Protect

Print2Protect is a group of high school students using mechanical engineering and 3D design in an effort to assist hospitals with the fight against COVID-19.

According to the New York Times (as of 4/8/20), California has the fourth most cases of COVID-19 in the United States. In California, Santa Clara County has the second-highest COVID-19 deaths and third-most overall cases. Healthcare facilities are rapidly running out of supplies and the sudden spike in cases has put a burden on California's inventory of personal protection equipment (PPE). Healthcare workers are in desperate need of PPE, and with the peak of infections projected to be within the next two weeks, hospitals are already facing a shortage of face masks and face shields.

In light of this situation, our goal is to organize groups of students and makers to take advantage of 3D-printing technology to protect our local community. Print2Protect has established a coalition of students to 3-D print PPE (namely face shields) for local healthcare workers. Currently, our team consists of six students and one professional engineer with a total of 8 3D printers.  Our mission is to raise funds for 3-D printing materials and collaborate on the united goal of supporting our local frontline healthcare workers.

Print2Protect is calling for everyone to help the vulnerable frontline medical workers who are putting their lives at risk every day. We have already printed 50 face shields and have donated them to medical workers. We are currently working with hospitals such as Valley Medical Center and PAMF to donate more masks as they are printed. However, we need funds to continue to print shields to support the medical workers at these hospitals. 100% of all donations will go directly to filament and material for the shields, all of which will be donated to frontline medical workers who desperately need our help. Let’s work together to alleviate the risks for these brave workers who are risking their health to treat patients of COVID-19!

Our Design
Our design is based on the UCSF 3D Printed Face Shield Project published by the UCSF Makers team and approved by the UCSF Clinical Technology Department. This model allows us to mass-produce face shields while using less 3D printer filament compared to other models. Along with the filament to print the face shield, we are using a rubber band to secure face masks to the user's head. Currently, we are able to print an average of one shield per hour across all 8r printers but are currently investigating techniques to reduce that time to 40 mins per facemask. According to the FDA, these improvised face shields are not required to be regulated upon distribution, but our model is directly derived from the UCSF model which has been tested and proven to be effective in the UCSF hospital. We have worked hard to decrease the face shield printing cost to under $1 per unit, so every dollar will support one healthcare worker with a face shield. All proceeds will go directly to 3D-printing filament and clear plastic that will be used in creating face shields.

How You Can Support Us
Frontline medical professionals are working long hours at hospitals to treat patients and are very vulnerable to catch the virus. At the end of the day, they're risking their own lives to help us treat the sick and reduce the possibilities of transmission of the virus. We prepared 4 ways you can make an impact.

1. Donate to Print2Protect's campaign! Donations will directly help pay for the necessary supplies to manufacture face shields. We need funds as we are rapidly running out of the PET-G filament, Mylar or PVC clear sheets, and elastic cords needed to create these shields. If you have any of those materials, please contact us at [email redacted] so that we can continue to print more shields.

2. Become a Printer! Do your part and join Print2Protect's initiative in printing PPE for local healthcare workers. If you are located in the South San Jose region, contact [email redacted] to join our team.

3.  Educate. This period of self-quarantine resulted in temporary closures of major businesses. As a result, this is a time period of VERY low productivity that most hardworking professionals from various professions are unaccustomed to. So,if you  or anyone you know has experience in architectural design, business, 3-D modeling, or advertising and are willing to help us with our campaign contact us at [email redacted]. So, if any experts or business leaders are able to help us improve any aspect of Print2Protect, we are eager to learn!

4. Help advertise Print2Protect! In order to get enough people involved in making and distributing PPE to healthcare workers, we need everyone to spread the word! Everyone can make a difference in their community and we need to work together in order to fight the virus stronger! Everyone can do their part in fighting this virus by providing medical equipment for healthcare workers. It's only if we work together that we can organize an efficient group of makers who can help flatten the curve. So, if you have access to any social media platforms (i.e. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) we highly encourage that you spread the news!
