We are, unapologetically, Primadonnas. We got together at the start of 2019 to see if we could create the world as it should be, for one weekend. And with lots of help from our friends, we did it.
Over one glorious weekend in August, the inaugural Primadonna Festival brought together writers, editors, readers, publishers, artists, thinkers, comedians, performers, musicians, foodies and over a thousand happy people of all ages and many backgrounds. We shared experiences, explored new ideas and imagined new possibilities.
People told us they hadn’t just had fun. Primadonna had changed their lives. They begged us to do it again. And that’s what we’re planning to do.
Primadonna is a unique space where ideas are encouraged, not shut down. Where difference is celebrated, not condemned. And where the voices of women and those who are marginalised in the mainstream are put front and centre.
The Primadonna Prize, launched ahead of the first Primadonna Festival, offered an opportunity to unrepresented and unpublished writers to break through. It is the first literary prize to be judged blind (all first-round entries are anonymised) and to look past spelling and grammar to the artistic potential of the author. We have some very exciting plans for the Prize in 2020.
We were able to put on Primadonna 2019 and run the inaugural Primadonna Prize because of the generosity and courage of sponsors, funders, friends and family, who all believed in us.
To do this sustainably, we need this support and more. We need your help to build the world as it should be, for one weekend, this year and into the future.
Every pound you donate will help us deliver a Festival and a Prize in 2020 that enable imagination, curiosity, equality and fun to thrive.
And even if you can’t join us in Suffolk, July 31 – 2 August, you can help us create the world as it should be by donating today.
We set up Primadonna because we felt there was space for a festival that spoke to our hopes and dreams for a better future. Our line up of amazing writers, artists, comedians, musicians and publishers represented the diversity we want to see across the arts in the mainstream.
We made sure Primadonna Festival was fully accessible, and priced our tickets to make them as affordable as possible. We also matched donations from our supporters to provide free tickets for people who would not otherwise have been able to attend.
Primadonna Festival is a place of hope, inspiration, community and artistry. It’s a lot of fun, with a serious intent.
And the feedback we got was amazing:
‘Thank you, thank you, thank you! To say this was a life-changing weekend for me would be an understatement. So many of the inspirational writers and women have given me a renewed perspective and drive on how to improve and develop my writing. Thank you (one again!).’
‘Thank you Primadonna for a beautiful, inspiring festival in such a lovely place. Filled my notebook with writerly tips. Met so many talented and friendly people. Please do it again.’
‘Still buzzing from Primadonna Festival. The perfect mix of books and politics and creativity. And such a good, necessary reminder of the restorative and energising power of solidarity. Thank you so much to everyone who worked so hard to make it happen.’
With your help, we want to do it all again – and more.
Here are just some of the ways your money will make a difference:
By donating £15 you will help us set up and run as a Community Interest Company (CIC)
By donating £25 you will pay for our website for a month
By donating £50 you will pay to train a festival volunteer
By donating £100 you provide a travel bursary and ticket for a low-income festival-goer
By donating any amount, you are helping ensure that we can bring back the world as it should be – for one weekend, and perhaps for more.
