A Safe Space for vulnerable people in our community

Most people don’t reach out when they’re in crisis.
They reach out just before.
That moment… is where we meet them.
What if we could reach people before their darkest moment… and still be there in it?
Every day in Australia, nine lives are lost to suicide. Behind every number is someone’s child, parent, friend, or colleague.
But struggle doesn’t start at crisis. It builds quietly, over time.
That’s where Mowana Safe Space comes in.
We are here for the before.
Before the crisis.
Before things feel unbearable.
But also for the moment when they do.
We offer a place where people can walk in, sit down, have a coffee, and talk to someone who genuinely cares, without judgment, without paperwork, and without waiting weeks for an appointment.
Whether someone is feeling “not quite right”… or at breaking point… they are welcome here.
And it works.
In just three years, we have supported over 3,300 people in our community. In May 2026 alone, 159 people walked through our doors.
Some came early.
Some came when they felt they had nowhere else to go.
All of them mattered.
“I walked in on my darkest day, and for the first time, I felt seen, heard, and not alone.”
“In just a month, their support pulled me from darkness.”
— Julia, 16, Narrabeen
A Step Forward… And a Team That Never Stops Showing Up
Thanks to the incredible support of our local Council, we now have access to a space overlooking the calm of Narrabeen Lagoon. It includes a breakout room, an outdoor courtyard, and even a basketball court nearby, small but powerful ways to help people reconnect and breathe again.
But this space isn’t permanent.
Each time we open, our volunteers set everything up from scratch… and pack it all away again at the end of the night.
And still, we show up. Every time.
No matter the effort, no matter the limitations, we make sure the door is open for anyone who needs us, whether they’re quietly struggling or at breaking point.
We are also contributing rent toward this space, which adds pressure to a service run entirely by volunteers.
This space has given us stability…
but not certainty.
We’ve proven we will always find a way.
Now we need your help to make that way sustainable.
Our Goal: $100,000
This will secure a permanent, welcoming space for one year, covering rent, essential outgoings, and creating an environment where people feel safe the moment they walk in.
A place where no one has to pretend they’re okay.
Why Your Donation Matters
Because of our volunteer model, your donation goes straight to impact.
It doesn’t sit in layers of administration.
It doesn’t get diluted.
It turns into open doors.
Warm conversations.
Moments of connection that can change a life’s trajectory.
You’re not just funding a space.
You’re helping someone choose to stay.
