In every major city, there are places that preserve culture and history by allowing musicians, singers, poets and visual artists to extend their expressions from roots that were planted prior to their birth. Urban Roots is a cornerstone of local live Jazz, R&B, Soul and Blues, that on any given night can transcend one's reality and create the feeling of being in another place.
A place that for many of us who left and had the opportunity to see how intricate and vital African-American culture can be in a larger metropolitan area, is a beacon of light that indicates growth in our city. Urban Roots is the only African-American owned business in Oklahoma City’s Deep Deuce District. For five years it has been a place for artists to grow and for our community to bask in the gorgeous delights of local artists. It has also been a place for people to mobilize and move various organizations forward. Its not just a place for a diverse pool of musicians & singers, there are exhibits by local African & African American artists that add to the atmosphere of Urban Roots. Those paintings, sculptures and photos that grace the walls can collectively stand alone on their artistic merit.
Changes are underway in Bricktown and we want to insure that our Urban Roots remains a part of the landscape as Oklahoma City grows. We are asking for donations to ensure that our long term transition is possible. Our goal is $15,000 by June 6th. We believe that with the help of this community, we can meet our goal continue to be a positive force in Oklahoma City! If you know and love this location, this beacon of light for this city, then you know how much it is needed and valued. If you haven’t had the opportunity to get to know Urban Roots, we extend an open invitation to see what we are about. Our city, our culture, our legacy, our roots!!! #PreservingoURroots
