We are fundraising for "New York Jianghu," a feature documentary about the legacy of kung fu in New York City, from Hollywood to anti-Asian hate.
We are uniquely positioned to tell this story. The "hidden figures" who brought kung fu to New York City as immigrants have spent decades being misrepresented and exoticized in their portrayals. Despite their colossal contributions to global culture, including training the stars you see in films like Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings," and teaching the community self-defense, these Asian American titans have learned not to share their stories with just anyone. That's where we come in. We are a team of martial artists, all people of color native to New York City. Because we have the trust of the community, we have spent the last eight years working closely with them to finally bring their story to life.
Kung fu has meant something different for each generation since it left China and entered the streets of New York City. It was a means of putting food on the table, making your favorite action films, and now combating anti-Asian hate crimes in a rapidly-gentrifying New York.
New York is home to so many kung fu styles, some cannot even be found in China anymore. When people leave, what happens to the culture? This documentary will do our subjects justice, and paint a picture of ways they are fighting displacement from their home.
