Repeated storms pummeled East Texas starting in April, dumping massive amounts of wind and rain on our house and into Lake Livingston, that is at the end of my front yard. Hurricane Beryl completed the damage with a direct hit from the SE exposure of our house.
Shingles from our roof littered the yard, a huge tree fell onto the neighbor’s property, but fortunately didn’t touch his house or any of his outbuildings. My Texas family has occupied this location since 2006––lived through Hurricanes Ike and Harvey and fortunately, have had no insurance claim until now.
Insurance paid for many repairs. But there were still things that had to be done. I used the last of my savings a week ago to pay for three rotten sweet gum trees to be removed that were poised to do great damage to my neighbors property. On the outside they looked healthy, but with further inspection it became apparent they were rotten on the inside.
Then, suddenly, I received a letter from my insurance company saying that if I didn’t fix the rest of the repairs that they would stop insuring us after May 17, 2025. I found two excellent contractors that can get the work done by the middle of April.
My grandson Luc will finish all the other work that needs to be done that we can do (painting, power washing, siding repair, etc.) I can’t change insurance companies because they will not accept me.
My Husband passed away in February of 2017. He and I raised Luc in this home. Our grandson is now a full-time student majoring in music education (like my husband and I) at Sam Houston State University-about 25 miles from our home-so he could be close enough take care of us and his Traumatic Brain Injury mother.
I just found out that I have diabetes, which has been the cause of my leg issues. If we do not raise the money needed for these repairs, I will lose my home. I can’t afford, nor am I physically capable of moving due to my lack of mobility. Your generosity would be a blessing to preserve my dream retirement home. Please support us in this dire time, thank you.
