February is Black History Month, a time to recognize and preserve Black history in our communities. The cemetery of those who were enslaved at Litchfield Plantation is a site where this history can be protected, documented, and better understood.
This cemetery is a rare and irreplaceable site. Those buried here were denied recognition in life and in death. Preserving the cemetery helps to document, protect, and honor the lives of those interred.
The Litchfield Plantation Cemetery Conservancy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is the permanent steward of the site, responsible for its protection and care. This work reflects interest from Litchfield Plantation community members, descendants, and academic researchers who recognize the cemetery’s historical significance.
