Rebuilding Community: Betty & Vi’s Lounge
I used to help manage at a beloved neighborhood spot in East Durham, located in the heart of the historic Black Wall Street district. That place wasn’t just a job to me—it was home. It was a place where people came together, where strangers became regulars, and regulars became family.
When the doors suddenly closed without warning—no notice, no final paycheck—it was more than a loss of income. It was the loss of a community space that meant so much to so many. Watching it disappear overnight was heartbreaking.
But even in that moment, I knew one thing for certain: the spirit of that place didn’t have to end.
I’m now working to bring that feeling back—stronger, more intentional, and rooted in legacy—with Betty & Vi’s Lounge.
Named after my two great grandmothers, Betty and Vi, this space is inspired by the way they lived their lives. They weren’t known for drinking—but they were known for bringing people together. Their homes were filled with love, laughter, honesty, and warmth. Everyone was welcome. Everyone was family.
That’s exactly what I want to recreate—a space that honors the culture and history of East Durham while building something new for the community to gather, connect, and celebrate.
I’ll be honest—this journey hasn’t been easy. I had to restart this campaign after my previous one was unexpectedly taken down. It’s disheartening to face setbacks when you’re simply trying to build something positive. But I remain grounded in faith and purpose—because I know this vision is bigger than me.
With your support, the funds raised will go directly toward:
Securing rent and utilities
Purchasing essential equipment
Initial inventory (supplies)
Marketing and community outreach
Creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere through decor and design
The goal is to open and operate as a cocktail bar for the first 4–6 months, reaching stability and breaking even. From there, I plan to expand into the adjacent space and grow into a full-service restaurant with extended hours and even more opportunities to serve the community.
This isn’t just about opening a place, it’s about restoring a sense of belonging.
If you’ve ever experienced a place that felt like home, you understand how powerful that can be. I’m asking you to help me bring that feeling back to East Durham.
Every donation, every share, every word of encouragement brings this dream closer to reality.
Thank you for believing in me—and in the vision of Betty & Vi’s.
