There aren’t a lot of great options to address period pain. One of them is pharmaceuticals, like Midol and Advil, but they are synthetic, can have negative health effects, and add to pill fatigue that many face. Another option that many do is nothing and just suffer through the pain.

Code Red is a new, indulgent dark chocolate product containing bioactive ingredients, targeted to individuals experiencing menstrual pain. Code Red simultaneously provides the pleasure of eating dark chocolate, along with addressing muscle function as a form of self-care.

The clean-label chocolate squares uses 3 evidence-based bioactive ingredients: vitamin D, magnesium, and calcium. Research shows that menstrual pain is higher in those with low calcium and vitamin D levels. Code Red includes these bioactive ingredients and is a step towards improving nutrient deficiencies. The dark chocolate is an excellent source of magnesium, which contributes to normal muscle function.

Plus, Code Red is Fairtrade certified and has compostable packaging to reduce its environmental impact. Code Red is the first chocolate of its kind in Canada with every pouch being handcrafted by me!

The idea for Code Red was born during my degrees at the University of Guelph. It wasn’t until I was studying Nutritional and Nutraceutical Sciences where I learned how bioactive ingredients can improve our health in exciting and practical ways. Plus, I’ve experienced menstrual pain for many years.

For a long time, I thought there was nothing I could do but simply suffer through the pain. I wanted to use my knowledge in nutrition, along with my experiences in functional food product development, and a personal love of dark chocolate to make a product that could help people like me (and people like you or a loved one).

Now that I’m a recent master’s graduate from Human Health and Nutritional Sciences, I’m excited to share the product with you that I’ve been working on for months. Code Red is the first product from my new startup, BioSnactive Foods Inc., which makes nutritious treats that do good for you and the planet. I’m currently working a full-time job, but I hope that BioSnactive can become a major source of income!

Code Red is now exclusively available via pre-order for $9.99/pouch, with the product first being sold in person at Fair November Craft Show (November 14 to 17 at the University Centre, University of Guelph). After the show, Code Red will be available on the BioSnactive website, as well as at Guelph Farmer’s Market.
