Pre-Postnatal Piggy Care, Spay & Neuter

Tax deductible

Two weeks ago we had a request from a family in a desperate situation asking us to take their two pigs, Dumpling (previously Karen), a dwarfed Kunekune 1.5 yo, and Kevin, a Mangalica, 1 yo. Dumpling, the female, has been in isolation since her intake; as she is not spayed and we have two intact males in our care. We spay/neuter each resident as soon as possible upon intake, so we asked our vet to come out to assess the animals for surgery and do routine tusk/hoof care on the whole drift.

On Monday, during our vet visit, we found out Dumpling is unexpectedly pregnant. To our knowledge, Dumpling and Kevin had been separated for at about 4 weeks when we took them in. What makes this scary... Kevin is 3 times her size at 150 lbs!!
Judging by Dumpling's tummy size and pre-pregnancy weight (approx. 75 lbs) she is at least 10-12 weeks pregnant and this means she was bred before she was surrendered to us.

Sadly, male pigs can breed as young as 3 months, and sows get pregnant as early as 6 months old. They are not yet fully grown themselves, but their reproductive organs are ready to go.
We are terribly concerned that she may struggle delivering those piglets and are coming up with an emergency plan, starting with 24/7 video surveillance. Our fabulous vet team from Town & Country Veterinary Service is very involved and ready to jump into action day or night.

As you can expect, there are already looming medical bills for this unexpected endeavor.
Best case scenario, we need to get Kevin neutered and Dumpling spayed upon delivering the piglets, along with getting the piglets vaccinated and spayed/neutered when they're old enough.
Worst case, we could be looking at an emergency c-section for Dumpling, along with the added surgery/recovery costs, neuter for Kevin and piglet care.

As you probably guessed, our non-profit sanctuary relies on donations and fundraising to keep these animals well taken care of.
We could really use your help. Please donate, if you are able, or share this fundraiser with people close to you! Thank you so much for supporting our new 501(3)c non-profit and allowing us to give the best care to these wonderful animals!
