With the closing of RMCH L&D and prenatal services, patients in the greater Gallup area who are not IHS eligible currently have to travel to Grants or ABQ for prenatal care. Over the course of a normal pregnancy, this can mean 10-20 visits, creating untenable transportation costs, time away from work, childcare needs and more. Many patients are making the 2-4 hours commute, but others are going without care entirely. Given this need, Gallup Community Health is making key changes to our services. We will begin offering prenatal care, provided by our family physicians with our OB/GYN team consulting for high risk cases. We are working closely with Cibola Hospital in Grants, as well as partners in Albuquerque to make deliveries as seamless as possible without local L&D services available. Thanks to these partners, we have the equipment needed, but insurance costs are very high to add prenatal services. As Gallup's nonprofit, community-led clinic, we are looking to the Gallup community and our supporters near and far to help fund the $20,000 increase in insurance costs. This is a one-time need, as we fully expect clinic revenues to cover this expense long term, but your help with this start up need helps bring a much-needed service back to Gallup.
