A close friend, Kursida Islam (age 31), was recently widowed after her husband suddenly passed away from a short but brutal battle with lung cancer earlier this July. They had only found out about his diagnosis a month prior and were told the cancer had already metastasized, meaning it was too late to start treatment. Her husband, Mohirul Islam (age 47), was given a medical death sentence and had no time to financially, let alone emotionally, prepare for his death. Mr. Islam sadly passed away at JPS Hospital, TX, on July 15, 2022. They have had two wonderful children together and now have a third one on the way as she is six months pregnant. In 2019, Kursida had already lost her second child, her second son, when he was only an infant and is still trying to recover from that tragic loss. Kursida is a single mother trying to care for her 8-year-old daughter independently. Her daughter, Sheza, was extremely close with her dad and little brother.

Mohirul Islam was a hardworking man and an even more active father, supporting his immigrant household on an Uber salary. The family came to the USA 10 years ago for better opportunities. However, this American dream was uprooted after his sudden passing. In Kursida’s depression and compounding grief, it has become increasingly difficult for her to meet her children’s needs. This, coupled with finances such as funeral expenses, rent, food, and utilities have put an extreme burden on the poor mother.
