Hi my name is Kerry, after an early emergency c section Precious the Harlequin Blue Merl rough collie puppy came into this world alone with no litter mates under 100g body weight. She fought so hard with no strength to suck, but I did not give up. I expressed her mums colostrum and fed her every hour 1 ml to sustain her whilst she got stronger. After 6 days she was able to suck with assistance finding the nipple. 12 days she could find her own way and nurse by herself. Being a week early took its toll and after 23 days her eyes started to open. Sadly i noticed something was wrong, she didnt move like a normal puppy and she kept banging into the whelping box walls.
At 5 weeks she was diagnosed as being sight impaired, the extent we still not confirmed, but it doesnt look good as to her ant level of sight. But Precious's problems do not stop there, she has sustained either in the womb or after birth a broken femor bone in her hind leg. My first thougth was to pur her down as I could not see how she would be able to have a quality life and I am so devestated that my tiny pup i fought so hard for will be lost forever.
After some very lovely people on the Blind Dogs fb page wiped up my tears and chatted to me half the night, I am blown away by there experiences and love for there blind dogs, I have to give Precious a chance and I just cant put her to sleep.
She is strong, playful, cuddly and smart, even at 5 weeks she is coping so well with her disadvantages. She has no pain in the broken leg, it has actually mending in this awkward postition, the vets have confirmed there is no rush to do anything serioius at this stage. My plan is to talk to the surgeon next week and plan a timeline and future for Precious, but I am unable to afford a repair surgery at this stage. So i am reaching out for some help from my friends to help me save her and give her a joyful life as a blind dog with either 3 legs or one rebuilt leg. I am unsure of what her treatment will look like at this stage but i will always be greatful for the communities help and support through this tough time. kind regards Kerry
Update: Precious is now in surgery to repair and pin her broken leg, I will update hew progress tonight :) Its very stressful waiting for news
