Precious is a kind, smart, thoughtful, beautiful & strong woman. She has just turned 16 years old. She is very petite at 4ft7 and 75 pounds.
On June 23, 2020, Sherman police received a frantic call in the very early morning hours from Precious that there was an attack going on in her home. She was in the bathroom with her dad William (62) and it was later determined that William's grandson, (technically Precious' 22 yo nephew) was attacking and stabbing them with a knife. William had brought him into his home a few days prior, to help him out.
Police arrived at the home to find Precious screaming inside. The police entered and were able to distract the bloody attacker, holding a knife, for a moment, before he returned to the bathroom and began attacking Precious and her father again as Precious (an aspiring Nurse) was checking her Dad's pulse.
The police shot and killed the man while he was attempting to continue stabbing William and Precious. William died from his wounds. Precious was airlifted to a Children's Trauma in Dallas. She had suffered 18 stab wounds.
She was understandably unresponsive for a time, went through multiple surgical procedures, has nerve damage in her foot and hands. She will need an extensive amount of physical, occupational, mental health and emotional therapy resulting from PTSD and reliving the memories of what she went through for a long time to come.
Her mom, Susan, said the first thing she did when she became conscious was use sign language to ask about her Dad. She had her 16th birthday was while she was in the hospital.
Although she has been released from the hospital, her Mom says she has increasing pain, and she can walk some, but not without assistance. She can't walk a straight line and says she feels like an old lady.
Her parents are divorced, but got along well. They both did everything to support Precious. Dad had been on disability for many years. Mom is kind and is a hard worker, who works in a food processing plant. They make the taquitos that you find on the rollers next to the hotdogs at the corner store, among other things. Her job is to "throw tortillas at a machine". These are just simple normal people.
Mom says she hasn't yet looked at the bills that have already started arriving from the hospital. Her current understanding is that Precious will have 3 more months of insurance coverage before another answer must be found. She understands that, after insurance, there is a 20% out of pocket bill to them. We're still looking into all the details and options.
The truth is, the blessing would be for the world village to help this family with this traumatic recovery. In a better world, Mom could spend time helping her daughter heal and getting her to the untold number of appointments and medical events they are facing. This will likely continue for years.
She will be a high school Junior this fall. This is a young lady who plays clarinet in the school band and is on the school Step Team. She has dreams of becoming a Registered Nurse. She now has these physical and medical needs to add to the mounting pressure of preparing the path into becoming an adult.
We need your kind help to get Precious feeing safe and strong again - and on the mend. I've seen what the world sent to the Barista who argued with the lady about wearing a mask in California, and the Salon Owner who got support for opening her salon in Texas despite orders to stay closed during Covid-19 closures. I believe I have set a realistic goal for a Legit Trauma.
Whatever funds raised will be used for current and upcoming medical bills, co-payments, ongoing/new health insurance (if necessary) and related needs for her physical, occupational and emotional therapies. Our goal is to take some pressure off Mom so she can be there to help Precious heal, recover and grow. Any additional funds raised will be used to for her education.
As a member of Precious' & Susan's "family of choice" who has watched Precious grow up over the last decade+, I am asking our community to help them on this long path to recovery.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please help us spread the word to others who might willing to contribute. Any amount you can give will be appreciated, no matter how small. Thank you for your support.
