Nikhita's Pre Medical Educational Program

Hi, My name is Nikhita Sharma and I am fundraising for my month journey to India for educational purposes. This rare opportunity costs 5000 CAD dollars for about a month, which as a full-time pre-med student, is really hard for me to acquire within 3 months.

Why is this important to me?

This is important to me as I seek to gain knowledge and experience related to my career which is to become a doctor. The idea of following the path toward achieving a doctorate came from my uncle, who wanted to become a doctor but failed to do so as he went through kidney transplants twice. I have seen him struggle as he waited for years for an organ donor. As a child, I made up my mind to make his life easier for future transplants by going into the field of medicine myself. Every time I saw him go through the painful process of waiting to receive a kidney, I found myself trying to come up with creative solutions such as prosthetic organs. He is my mentor as he unlocked a passion in me and helped me spend most of my childhood learning about science through the Discovery Channel and “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”. My uncle is an inspiration to me and has guided me to live a life full of helping others, who are struggling with the same problem as him.

What can I gain from the Atlantis Shadowing Program?

My parents brought me to Canada in 2014 to provide me with better resources to pursue my dream of becoming a doctor. Currently, I am in my 2nd year at McMaster University. I am enrolled in the Life Sciences Program. I came across Atlantis while searching for Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) preparation resources. Atlantis provides pre-med students with an opportunity to discover the Shadow Aboard Program, where one gets the chance to experience working in a hospital among doctors and observe life through their perspective. I thought of it as a great opportunity for me to gain experience and become ahead in my medical journey.

Why did I choose India?

I chose India because of how much they have to offer in the medical field. Not only do they have excellent hospitals with modern innovative technology, but on top of that, they have a rich history which is shown through sensational culture and architecture. India has a story to tell and I would be deeply honoured to learn about and understand its historical landmarks.

Hospitals in India would provide me with 20+ hours of weekly departmental shadowing abroad. Following The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) recommendations for pre-health experiences abroad, all hours are observation-only. I would shadow different surgical departments such as Cardiology, Anesthesiology, and Emergency. I would get the chance to explore modern medical technologies such as ultrasound machines, laparoscopy towers, and EKG monitoring systems. All in all this entire journey would help expand my knowledge and further my goals in medicine.

Why should you invest in me?

I am someone who always knew what I wanted to do in my life. I know I have so much to offer and know that given the right opportunities I will progress immensely. Instead of being all talk, I want to prove to people willing to help me that they are investing in something great. That’s why I will be documenting my learnings and putting them out to the world to see through various social platforms. Following my journey in India, I would post pictures and recordings of all my new learnings. In general, I will post well beyond for my investors to know they have made the right choice and allow them to follow along in my journey.

I have had a lot of ups and downs in the process of being a pre-med student. It is a difficult journey but being accepted for this program validates my hardships. I am hoping my authenticity comes through and lets you know that I am very serious and passionate about what I do and whatever you can do for me will be very much appreciated. Even if you can’t donate money, but can still share my story on social media, that’s the help that I need.

Hi guys, over the past week, a lot of factors have made me want to my decision to continue my educational journey by going to India instead of Spain. I am doing this for many reasons but one of the main issues is the drastic increase in prices for Spain. Which are out of my budget. Also, I feel like India is much more effective as I will be getting more weeks of experience and will spend more time surrounding advanced technology.
