Assigned as a Fleet Marine Force Hospital Corpsmen (AKA: Combat Medic in other uniformed services) Ian was involved in a devastating mortar explosion in Hawthorne Nevada on March 18th 2013 while preparing for a combat deployment.
That night displaying great courage and selflessness Ian ignored his own massive facial and airway wounds, delayed his own evacuation to direct care to others who were severely injured. In fact Ian held his own airway open for over three hours until arriving in a Reno Nevada emergency room.

. Ian has recived multiple reconstructive surgeries and has experienced many set backs... Ian is blessed with a devoted wife and together they have endured the last eighteen months with great character. The future holds many challenges for the McClanahans.
