In January of 2015, Bernice Iniguez Ramirez (age 30) was rushed to the ER due to pain in her lower abdomen, after a few tests, Drs believed she had a cyst in her ovary, but after new test results came, they discovered it was an aggressive malignant tumor. After a biopsy surgery at Torrance Memorial, Bernice was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer.
She began her chemo treatments which would continue for the next 4 months, during this time she was still trying to maintain a normal life and keep her job, but after rounds of treatment, the effects of chemo started to take a toll on her and had no choice but to stop working.
In July, things began to get worse, the Drs advised us that the chemo did not show any positive results, the tumor grew to the size of a grapefruit, her kidneys backed up and was now put on a nephrostomy tube. Because she was no longer working, we discovered that her insurance would no longer cover her and since then it has been a battle against insurances and attorneys to help B get a second chance at life at another center.
Bernice was transfered to USC Keck Norris in October to begin different chemo treatments hoping for better results, this year has been a year of surgeries, hospital stays, painful chemo and blood transfusions for her. This week while in ICU we have received the heartbreaking news that Bernice's cancer has now spread to her spleen and kidneys, her intestines have ruptured and there is nothing more they can do, she is now fighting for her life. She will possibly be released on hospice, but we arent certain when, with thousands of dollars in medical bills and medications our family could truly use your support in this difficult time.
As I type this I am in tears because I am still in disbelief that my Aunt, my sister, is going through so much pain, she is a fighter, always been a strong, loving woman and I pray to God for a miracle.
