Hello Family and Friends. My beloved mother-in-law, Carol Toca, received upsetting news about the pain she’s been experiencing for the past several months. She was admitted to Kaiser Hospital Irvine last weekend and learned she has myeloma. Myeloma is a blood cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow. Normal plasma cells help the body fight off infection by producing anti-bodies, but these cancerous cells produce the wrong kind of anti-body, resulting in damage to the organs and weakening of bone structure. She has seen a loss in height of 2 Inches due to micro-fractures in the lower spine. Care must be taken to avoid falls or other fractures. Myeloma is not curable, but it can be treated. She has started a course of chemotherapy that we hope will lead to a bone marrow transplant. Her chemo cocktail includes pills and injections of several different meds to strengthen her bones and combat the cancer cells. The transplant will use stem cells from her own bone marrow. The goal is remission or slowing of the disease. Of interest, Her immediate issue is abnormally low sodium blood levels, and she’s currently taking salt tablets and greatly restricting fluid intake to increase those levels. We ask that you pray for Carol, her daughters Charis and Corinne, her husband Chuck, and all the grandchildren (Brayden, Everett, and Avaline). This is a difficult situation to make sense of, but we know that God is with her and has a plan. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11) We are extremely grateful to the Doctors, nurses and medical staff at Kaiser in Mission Viejo and the Irvine Hospital for their care of Carol, their rapid diagnosis and aggressive approach to treatment. Thankfully, Carol has the best attitude, and the optimism is clearly with her. Her Faith in God is as strong as ever and will carry her through this cancer battle in the days, weeks, and months ahead. Donations will be used to cover extra medical expenses and home care.
