After a camping trip, 19 year old Ethan Wall developed Guillain Barre' and Epstein Barr triggered by Lyme Disease resulting from a tick bite. Guillain Barre' is a very painful, rare disorder in which your body's immune system attacks the nerves.
On September 14 he complained of a bad headache, achy joints, and numbness in two fingers of each hand. On September 18 he was in the ER because he was unable to move his arms and legs, and by September 20, Ethan was unable to maintain his breathing, and was placed on a ventilator.
Of course it's been very scary for Ethan and his family, but he impresses them daily with his ability to keep his spirits up and to adjust to all of the changes that come with being paralyzed from the neck down. So far Ethan has had five plasmapheresis treatments , and began IVIG therapy this week. Ethan remains alert and fully aware of what is going on.
His team of doctors are hopeful that he will make a full recovery, but suggest he will require extensive rehabilitation upon his release from the hospital to fully recover.
Leigh Ann, Ethan's mom, has been by his bedside since he was admitted. She would love nothing more than to stay with him without worry about covering her bills due to being out of work.
