Our brother’s family can really use your help right now.
On Friday, October 21, 2017, Jason and Erin’s 19-month-old son, Carson, had a CAT scan that revealed a tumor in his right cheek. After initial testing in their hometown of Huntsville, Alabama, a local oncologist made a preliminary diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma (a rare form of soft tissue cancer). Carson was immediately referred to St Jude’s Children Hospital in Memphis for further analysis and treatment. On Sunday morning my brother and his family packed their car and drove four hours to Memphis.
Upon their arriving in Memphis, the real journey began for Carson. By Monday morning, Jason and Erin met with Carson’s new team of Oncologists. Carson was scheduled for blood work, MRI’s, and scans of all kinds. The doctors ordered a central line be inserted for treatments that would inevitably follow. After days of fasting and poking and prodding, the doctors determined a technical diagnosis - Stage 3 rhabdomyosarcoma - and an initial treatment plan for Carson.
There’s no doubt the treatment will be tough on Carson. His bravery will be tested as he faces an illness we all fear. However, we know his strength and determination will carry him through. He is a happy little boy whose parents, family, doctors and nurses will be there to love, support and care for him while he works hard to beat his illness. While Jason and Erin are focused on Carson and his needs, they too need our help and support.
If you know Jason and Erin, you know that they are the ones usually doing for others. They will go without to make something better for someone else and never ask or expect anything in return. Right now, though, they need your help and support, so we are asking for them.
Over the next several months, our brother’s family will endure hardships no one wants to suffer. While their just-under-two-year-old child is fighting for his life, their obligations for their jobs and home will be strained. The financial burdens they face from medical bills, endless travel and loss of work will be tremendously stressful. In addition, Erin is pregnant with her second child. A brother or sister for Carson is a tremendous blessing and all the more reason we need to show our support and caring for them during this time.
This little family needs us. The forces bearing down on them are too great for them to handle by themselves. They need us to help ease the real-life burdens as best we can while they get through this faith-challenging and life altering journey.
Please, let’s give them the help they would not ask for but so desperately need!
