Prayers for Bobby

Most of us know a couple like Bobby and Rene Mullins. Their relationship started as love at first sight. Through thick and thin, they have remained together for 26 years.

They sacrificed career opportunities and lived a simpler life so they could spend more time together -- and with their sons -- because they couldn't bear to be apart for very long. Life was a struggle, but their love never wavered. Family and heart have been everything to them.

They have raised two children, and are now blessed to be grandparents. Last year they were able to buy a comfortable house in Biloxi, Miss., and they thought it would be the home they spent the rest of their lives in together. Their vows mean something: For better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health … until death do them part.

It’s the last of the vows they are now facing. Bobby was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer in April of 2015, six weeks after they moved into their new home. The treatments and surgeries have forced him to go on disability. Rene is working part-time. Their total monthly income is about $2,500. Their monthly expenses are close to $2,900, and that doesn’t count Bobby’s medical expenses. They have medical insurance through the National Health Care Act. Even so, their current medical bills have exceeded $15,000 and are expected to increase this year as Bobby undergoes more treatment.

"We have tried the best we could to do this on our own financially... But we are reaching the limits of what we, and our families, can do. And with a stage 4 diagnosis, Bobby may need to go on to clinical trials to save his life. We don't want to lean on others, but we can't lose him," Rene said of her husband.

"I've told my family this isn't going to get me, and I'm determined to make that a reality,” Bobby said of his diagnosis. “I'm doing everything I can to beat this because I have a lot of life yet to live and love to share. This just can't be my time."

We want to raise $50,000 as quickly as possible to pay Bobby's medical expenses and so that he and Rene can keep the house they just bought. We know it's a lot, but Rene and Bobby will be thankful. A love like theirs deserves not to be ended by cancer.
