Amanda Marie Coleman, 28, was involved in a serious car accident on Sunday August 31, 2014 in Houston, Texas. She was found unconscious and was rushed to Ben-Taub hospital where the Doctors painted her family a pretty bleak picture for her survival. The next two days were very intense, but with amazing medical treatment, lots of prayer, and Mandy’s sheer determination to live, the pressure and bleeding in her brain finally subsided and she pulled through.
Mandy sustained many serious injuries, including several broken ribs, a broken clavicle, fractured vertebra, a torn spleen, and a fractured pelvis. However, the most serious of her injuries was a Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) which is a type of Traumatic Brain Injury.
Mandy spent over 3 weeks in the ICU at Ben-Taub hospital, and was transferred to Kindred Hospital, a post-acute care facility closer to home. The next 4 weeks at Kindred, Mandy was busy making huge strides in her recovery. She is breathing completely on her own, opening her eye, lifting her leg on command, and her vitals are stabilizing. While this may seem like small steps to some, it is huge for someone with this type of injury.
While Mandy is continuing to make progress in her recovery, it comes at a massive cost. Bills are starting to flood in leaving her family to wonder how they are going to be able to financially provide her with the care she needs. Her road to recovery is far from over and we’ve been told countless times that this is a marathon, not a sprint. While she has a dedicated support system at her side, much of the rehabilitation that Mandy will need is not covered by her insurance and any donation would be greatly appreciated. Mandy is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. Every day with her is a miracle and we thank God for giving her this chance to show the world His amazing grace and mercy.
