Scarlett Mooney's Leukemia Battle Fund
Let me introduce you to Scarlett Mooney - my two year old grand daughter. On October 19, 2019, just two weeks after her second birthday, Scarlett went to see the doctor for what was thought to be a routine visit for a possible ear infection. Instead of being given a prescription for antibiotics, Scarlett’s mom was told to take Scarlett to a local ER for blood work. From there, Scarlett and her mom soon found themselves being transported to MUSC Children’s Health in Charleston, SC for an emergency blood transfusion and tests to rule out or confirm a suspected diagnosis of leukemia.
The next day, a diagnosis of B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia was confirmed.
Over night, the life of Scarlett and her family was turned upside down.
In the short time since the diagnosis, the family has already faced chemotherapy and its side effects as well as the emotional strain of a family divided as Scarlett and her mom remain at the hospital while dad is at home, over an hour away, with big brother Mason, (a Type 1 diabetic kindergartener with special needs of his own.)
Each day is a new challenge right now, as the amount of things to learn and process seems never ending! Most likely, this first stay in the
hospital will last at least one month – the length of the first complete
round of chemotherapy treatments. If all goes well after that, Scarlett will go home, but will require ongoing and frequent visits to her doctors at MUSC for monitoring, tests and additional treatments as necessary.
At this point in time, there is no way to anticipate what the future holds as far as additional hospitalizations and treatments go - but they are
sure to come along. Even with no major complications or set backs, this is a journey that will be taken over the course of years – not weeks or
months.
Even with decent health insurance coverage, the expenses are going to mount up:
Co-payments, deductibles, and non-covered charges.
Lost wages while mom is unable to work.
Travel, food and lodging expenses.
A specific washing machine with a special sanitizing cycle.
Additional bedding and linens that are for Scarlett’s use only.
Childcare expenses for big brother when mom is away and dad is at work.
And things yet to be discovered.
Scarlett’s family genuinely believes that God can and will meet their
needs. They also know that God often uses the giving of others to
accomplish this.
People have asked how they can help during this time of need.
For this reason, this page is being set up – so that those who want to
help in this manner have a way to do so.
Please prayerfully consider helping Scarlett and her family at this
crucial time in her young life. Your consideration is greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
