**This GoFundMe page has been set up by family & friends who want to share their love and support for David & Jodi and their precious unborn baby girl, Lucy, due to arrive April 2017! **
Psalm 9:9-10 The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.
Lucy’s Story:
David and Jodi are the parents of two handsome little boys, Caden – 8yrs and Carter - 1yr (turning 2 in March). They are now pregnant with their 3rd baby. A beautiful, special little girl named Lucy.
At 21 weeks pregnant, Jodi and David found out Lucy has a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH). CDH occurs when a hole in the diaphragm fails to close during prenatal development and contents of the abdomen migrate to the chest through this hole. Lucy’s stomach, intestines, spleen and part of her liver are now crowding her lungs leaving limited room for them to grow and develop normally. It is life threatening and will require surgery after she is born.
There are only 5 clinics in the country that specialize in CDH. #1 is Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). For Lucy to have the BEST chance at survival, Jodi and David made a decision to seek out care at CHOP. It was there they received more devastating news.
Lucy has just a 29% chance at survival. The doctors predict her lungs will only grow to 17% unless something is done. Jodi and David were left with two options: Pray for a miracle and wait. Or trust God’s hands in the surgeons to try and save Lucy while she’s still in her mother's belly.
Since Lucy’s CDH is so severe, she is a candidate for an In Utero procedure called a Fetoscopic Endoluminal Tracheal Occlusion or FETO. FETO entails putting a balloon in Lucy’s airway causing fluid to build and lungs to grow which may aid in her survival. CHOP is FDA approved to perform 10 of these case studies. Lucy would be #2. Because this procedure is so new to the U.S., CHOP is flying in Dr. Jan Deprest from Belgium for assistance. Dr. Deprest has performed over 400 of these fetal surgeries in Europe. After lots of prayer, Jodi and David decided this procedure was their best hope in saving their daughter’s life.
The FETO procedure is planned for February 20th, 2017. Afterwards, Jodi must remain in Philadelphia on bed rest until delivery and continue her stay until they can bring Lucy home– possibly 6 months.
The road to recovery for Lucy will be a long one. After she is born, Lucy will most likely be put on a bypass machine called ECMO. ECMO will give her lungs more time to rest and promote further growth. She could be on this machine for up to 2 weeks. Then she will have to undergo surgery to repair the hernia where surgeons will guide the organs back into the abdomen and close the hole in her diaphragm.
If all surgeries are successful and Lucy's lungs develop, Jodi and David will finally be able to bring their daughter home to Satsuma, AL. They will continue to make regular visits to CHOP for the rest of her life for follow up care.
Here’s How WE CAN HELP:
As you can see, this is a very overwhelming situation Jodi and David are faced with. Unfortunately, there are many added expenses that go along with caring for a CDH baby like Lucy. On top of medical expenses- copays, high deductibles - there is the cost of traveling to and from Philadelphia, food expenses, lodging, and David will be taking an undetermined amount of time off from work to be in Philadelphia with Jodi, bringing their two boys to visit as much as possible.
We truly trust in the Lord’s provision on making all of this come together perfectly according to His will. We have prayed for God’s wisdom and ask for your help in any way He prompts you, whether it be in prayer or donation. James 1:5 – “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God and He will give it to you”
We appreciate you sharing their story so there may be one less burden on their shoulders. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers. We appreciate you fighting for Jodi and David so they can continue to fight for their baby. We will in turn pray for many blessings over you, as you are an answered prayer to our family during this time. The bible promises in 2 Corinthians 9:9-11 – “For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God”.
