Prayers For Brayden

Donation protected
We want to share an important update with our school community regarding one of our students, Brayden Deckerd. Some are already aware of what Brayden and his family have been facing, but many Oak Ridge Staff felt it was important to share this information more broadly so our community can support them through thoughts, prayers, and encouragement.
Before Thanksgiving, Brayden and his family noticed a knot on his lower jaw that was initially thought to be a swollen lymph node. An ultrasound was completed to rule out infection, but further evaluation by specialists and a biopsy confirmed their concern. On December 23, Brayden was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) — a diagnosis that is especially difficult as Brayden has bravely battled cancer once before and successfully overcame it.
Following his diagnosis, Brayden underwent extensive testing, including PET and MRI scans, as well as port placement surgery on December 30. He began chemotherapy on December 31, requiring a three-day hospital admission. Despite surgery, treatments, and limited recovery time, Brayden’s determination and strength were evident as he was able to attend a basketball scrimmage shortly after being discharged.
With the support of his family, Brayden was able to enjoy two weeks of school, basketball games, and tournaments before beginning his next phase of treatment. The week of January 20 marked the start of a second round of chemotherapy, consisting of several weeks of back-to-back treatments. An MRI of his lungs showed no signs of spread, which is encouraging news.
As of February 4, Brayden is undergoing an open tissue biopsy of his left fibula, along with additional imaging. The hope is that this area will be cancer-free so the treatment plan can continue as intended.
The current plan includes completing approximately 10 weeks of chemotherapy, followed by a complex reconstructive surgery of his jaw that will require an extended hospital stay. Additional chemotherapy may follow as doctors work toward the goal of Brayden being cancer-free once again.
Brayden has already shown incredible courage and resilience in the face of challenges no child should have to endure — and he has beaten cancer before. Our thoughts are with Brayden and his family, and we ask that you continue to keep them in your prayers. Those who wish may also include Brayden on church prayer lists.
We are grateful to Brayden’s friends and classmates for their kindness and support, and for helping make his time at school and activities meaningful during these past weeks.
Brayden is a strong, determined young man who has already faced more than most his age. After bravely battling cancer once before, Brayden and his family are now facing another incredibly difficult journey.

As you can imagine, the medical expenses associated with ongoing treatments, hospital stays, travel, and recovery are significant. This fundraiser has been created to help support Brayden and his family with medical bills and related expenses so they can focus fully on his care and healing.
Any donation, no matter the amount, is deeply appreciated. If you are unable to give, please consider sharing this page and keeping Brayden and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support during this difficult time.
