Prayers and Support for Nick and Sara Groff

Hello Friends and Family of Nick and Sara Groff,

My name is Cantrell Schlecht and my dear friends Nick and Sara Groff are in need of prayers and support right now. I am creating this fundraising page with the approval of Sara and Nick in order to share updates, support them during this trying time, and hopefully, ease some of the financial burdens of medical/recovery expenses. They need us and our prayers more than ever now. Nick experienced a cardiovascular event on Tuesday, September 3rd and Sara shared the update below on Friday, September 6th:

“Early on Tuesday morning, my husband Nick woke me up with blood all over him (and the dining room floor) yelling to call an ambulance with no memory of what happened. Two ambulance rides, two hospitals, one CT scan, one MRI, one broken nose, a concussion, stitches, 2 EKGs, 1 echocardiogram, countless other tests … and now 4 days later and we’re still guests of the hospital unsure as to what exactly is going on. What we do know is in two different hospitals, I watched my husband try to sit up and then pass out while he had a syncopal episode. We’ve seen two cardiologists, and we’ll see another today for more tests and a procedure. Hopefully, they figure it all out. We’re praying they have wisdom and can see just how to help him, so he doesn’t have to be bedridden flat on his back anymore.

We’re so grateful for kind nurses who explain things and answer questions and provide such good care. We are also immeasurably grateful for all the people who visited, who are praying, who reach out and who help in any way they can. And while absolutely none of this has been in our control, we know God is sovereign.

My mother-in-law made a comment about how composed I was in all of this (I’m an easy crier, it’s true). I’ve been thinking about that a lot and while I’m sure part of that is a “just do the next thing” practical response due to past life experiences (and the fact that she wasn’t with me to see me any of the times I broke down), I’m also calm knowing that in all things God is always good. No matter what. You see, I watched my husband’s heart stop for 5 seconds. I’m sure in medical terms it doesn’t mean what it does to me. They call it a pause and the cardiologist who said a pacemaker wasn’t the answer said it wasn’t a long enough pause for a pacemaker to even work. But to me, it was a zero and a flat line on a screaming monitor. It was a nurse catching him mid-fall back into bed and rubbing his sternum yelling at him to wake up. 5 seconds is forever when you’re watching your whole life end and everything has slowed down, time has stopped. But as I climbed up on that bed to be over him in his line of sight as he came back, I just kept telling him he’d be okay, and no matter what God is good, and He is in control.

We’ve talked a lot these days about the goodness of God. Even in the midst of these trying circumstances we see it and we are grateful. Nick could have laid on the floor at home all night bleeding if God didn’t wake him up again and give him the strength to come wake me up to get help. God allowed him to have these episodes in both hospitals so trained professionals could help figure out what this is so hopefully it can be fixed. The list goes on and on. But most importantly, we saw the mercy of God touching his heart to wake it back up and beat again.

Please be praying for Nick and for the doctors to use the wisdom that God gives them to resolve this. God is always good” (Sara Groff).

Thank you all for reading, sending up prayers for Nick and Sara, and also for considering sending in some financial help. Please do not feel pressured to give monetarily, Nick and Sara desire your prayers more than anything and I ask, as their friend, if you could please share their story and this fundraising page to reach more people for support. God is indeed always good. Thank you.
