Prayers and Support for Mike

Hi everyone, My name is Vera Derkson. I have been an RN for 45 years. I love caring for others. It is a perfect fit for me to be a health care advocate in our community and a resource to many friends and family about their health care and health concerns. I have assisted and supported many who have dealt with cancer, diabetes, heart and stroke issues.

My background inspired me to create this GoFundMe account for Mike Wolfe, a hard-working, kind and much loved first cousin of mine. Our families are very close and recently came together to celebrate our blessings and love for one another. We were all so excited to see my Aunt Betty, Mike’s mom who recently turned 101 years old, my mom Colette who turned 88 years old, and our siblings, cousins and other family members.

Now let me share some background about Mike. Mike is a semi-truck driver who is 69 years old and spends between 10 to 12 hours daily delivering goods in Ohio. Mike shared with me a health concern he was dealing with. When I saw Mike, it confirmed in my heart that I needed to help my cousin.

He was diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer which means the cancer has spread to other parts of his body. Mike has lost 35 pounds (obvious in his pictures) and his job is becoming more challenging as his strength weakens and his pain worsens. He told me he can’t afford to retire and has missed work days without pay. I knew he was very stressed and I encouraged him to focus on his medical treatment and to keep his faith and his attitude strong so that he can overcome this diagnosis.

Mike is very concerned about his finances. I decided to make an effort to raise funds to help with mounting medical bills, paying rent and utility bills and buying groceries especially when he can no longer work to support himself. I truly believe that God is so great and that all miracles are possible in the care of God.

Mike’s oncologist recommended that he do all that he can to lower his stress. I promised Mike that I would do whatever I can to help him continue with his cancer treatment and reduce some of the stress he is dealing with.

I wanted to share a picture of Mike a year ago and a picture of Mike two weeks ago. Mike and I recently took a picture at our recent family gathering.
