Prayers and Support for Baby Nico's Recovery

On May 10th we unfortunately had to take our 1 month old son Nico to the Emergency Room due to a distended abdomen which was causing him some major discomfort in which he began not eating and was unable to go to the bathroom. Within an hour of the ER visit we were told we would need to be Med-flighted to Sioux Falls due to Nico’s electrolytes being extremely low causing concern that he could possibly start having seizures. After being flighted to the children’s hospital in Sioux Falls they admitted us into the PICU and began running all kinds of tests and blood work to determine what could be causing everything to be thrown off so majorly. Tuesday a few of the tests were beginning to come back and slowly we were starting to get some answers and the main concern was his kidneys but we still had to wait for more tests to confirm the diagnosis. By Wednesday morning our sweet boy was beginning to look better but was in need of a blood transfusion due to him having a low hemoglobin. Suddenly around 3:30pm that afternoon Nico began to crash and went into respiratory failure and our entire world was flipped upside down. We were absolutely terrified and devastated we didn’t understand how it all happened and changed so quickly. Nico had to be sedated and placed on a ventilator to help him breathe and a feeding tube was placed for him to eat and he stayed on the ventilator until Saturday morning when we woke up they had removed it because he was doing great breathing on his own and the doctors were very happy with his stats but unfortunately by that evening Nico began to struggle again and by 10pm he had gone into respiratory failure for a second time and his heart rate dropped and they had to begin CPR. Since he has been sedated and place on a stronger type of ventilator. Doctors are still unsure of what caused this and are still doing everything they can to get us answers but unfortunately these things take a lot or time and resources so we are waiting and being as patient as we can but until Nico is more stable a lot of things have had to be put on hold so he will remain in the PICU on a ventilator. Carlos and I are devastated with all that our sweet baby boy has had to endure in such a short amount of time. With all that being said we still have a very long road ahead of us but we remain positive, hopeful, and are leaning on our faith. With medical expenses, traveling, food, bills and everything in between that’s headed our way during this time we would greatly appreciate any support, prayers & donations during this extremely difficult time to ensure stability while Nico receives the best care on his road to recovery.
We love & appreciate everyone so much! -Destiny, Carlos, Enzo & Nico
