Help Nanay Nonelona Recover from a Stroke While Visiting Canada

Our dear Nanay Nonelona is still in the hospital after suffering from two stroke attacks in just two weeks.

On Sunday morning, October 5, we brought her to the emergency room because she was having hallucinations and was confused the night before. After several tests, the doctors found bleeding and a blood clot in her right brain and a stroke on the left side of her brain.

In the first 36 hours at the hospital, she had two CT scans and many blood tests. Because of the stroke, her left eye lost vision as her glaucoma became worse. After days of treatment, the doctor said she was stable — her bleeding had stopped, and her blood pressure was okay. On October 16, she was discharged so she could continue her medicines and therapy at home.

However, the blood clot was still there. The doctors could not continue giving her strong blood thinners because she already had bleeding in her brain, and giving more could make it worse and become dangerous for her.

Sadly, only two days later, on October 18, Nanay had her second stroke. The doctors explained that this can happen when the brain and blood vessels are still weak after the first attack. This second stroke was stronger and affected the part of her brain that controls vision, which is why she suddenly lost sight in both eyes.

Her latest CT scan showed that the blood clot is still there but not worse than before. The doctor also told us that there will be no changes in her condition moving forward. Nanay also started showing signs of early dementia after her second stroke. She forgets names, gets confused, and sometimes mixes up her words.

Nanay is still in the hospital for treatments, therapy, and close monitoring. The medical bills continue to increase every day — it has already reached around $70,000 CAD since her first admission.

Nanay is being treated at St. Thomas Elgin Hospital in Ontario, Canada. Because she is here on a tourist visa, her medical bills are not covered by OHIP, and all expenses are out of pocket.

Nanay is 75 years old, a loving mother of 4, grandmother of 11, and great-grandmother of 3. She became a widow at 40 but stayed strong for her family.

She helped raise her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with so much love, patience, and faith. She loves gardening and crocheting, and she always brings joy to everyone around her.
