Braxton, a strong 4 year old, was diagnosed with stage 4 high-risk Neuroblastoma cancer in October 2023. At diagnosis, the cancer had already spread throughout his body, rendering him unable to walk. He underwent five cycles of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, followed by a rigorous nine-hour resection surgery in April 2024. Remarkably, after surgery, Braxton began learning how to walk independently.
A month after surgery, Braxton, along with his six-year-old sister Briella, and their parents, embarked on a 15-week stay at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis for further treatment. During their stay, Braxton underwent a challenging stem cell transplant and radiation therapy.
Upon returning home last August, Braxton completed three more cycles of immunotherapy before relapsing a week before Thanksgiving. This setback necessitated the start of a new regimen of chemotherapy and immunotherapy combinations, which he continues to receive actively. Due to the severe side effects of treatment, Braxton must be admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for a week each cycle and is administered a morphine drip to help with the pain while receiving treatment. After his recovery period of two to three weeks at home, he repeats the cycle.
Recent scans conducted in June revealed disease progression, with the emergence of a new spot. Currently, Braxton, along with his sister Briella, and their parents, are at St. Jude in Memphis for additional chemotherapy and radiation therapy. As you can imagine, this has been a profoundly challenging emotional journey for the family. Braxton’s mother had to resign from her job upon his diagnosis, and his father’s inability to work during hospital stays has also made this a financial hardship.
Braxton’s immune system is compromised, and he has central lines inserted into his jugular vein. Consequently, his sister Briella has been homeschooled, and her childhood has been significantly impacted. Despite the hardships, Briella has remained steadfast in her desire for her brother’s recovery, hoping they can play together like normal kids again.
Braxton has a passion for tools and heavy machinery, particularly excavators and dozers. Even when he feels unwell and weak, he continues to assist around the house and perform tasks independently.
