Miss Emmelia Marie was born on May 3rd, 2015 at a gestation of just 24 weeks 6 days. She was delivered via c-section and weighed just 1lb 4oz and under a foot long. Emmie IS a miracle, most of the medical staff barley believe she was only as far along as she was and tell us continually that she doesn't know how little she is. Since birth, she has been gaining weight, growing and getting stronger everyday... Her feedings have increased and she now weighs about 1lb 8oz and is exactly a foot long! Her feedings increase daily and to our amazement, has been able to consume breastmilk. The milk is mixed now with fortifiers which add extra calories and nutrients that help her get stronger, pray that she continues to do well with this.
At this point, there are talks about taking her off of the ventilator and moving her to the cpap machine, which is what we hope for. We just need her to gain about 750 more grams, to do so. Long-term adverse effects of the ventilator are very serious and we need for her to get stronger as soon as possible so that we can lower the chance of those effects.
Therapy for her feet has started and she has scans and tests run often to make sure she is stable internally. Day 10 of life was a big one, as they scanned her brain for any bledding and her lungs for lung disease or any additional issues... So far she is developing perfectly and has no signs of trouble, bleeding, lung disease or anything else that would hold her back from growing big and strong & we are hopeful.
I can more than biasedly say, she is the most beautiful, precious baby and already has so much zest for life-- I have never met such a small baby with such a giant impact, on so many people... Even the nurses at the hospital fight over who gets to care for her. It is truly incredible to witness.
This journey is just beginning for the family, there will be good days and bad days, NICU stays now and many other things happening later, therapies, treatments, gas to and from the hospital, etc... Cassie is at the hospital more than any other parent in the unit, she is 100% hands on and knows exactly what Emmie needs, wants and likes. Ryan works and comes to the hospital as soon as he can... It is easy to see their dedication and love for their babygirl and her health. This is such a truly taxing time for them, with one income and so much going on, which is why we started this.. It is our hope that even if you can't afford much, or anything at all, that you keep Emmie in your prayers.
