A few weeks ago our family became shattered with the news that my mother's horse Sirius Black had a seizure. Previously Sirius was a very healthy horse but had recently damaged his stall. My mother decided to put a nanny cam in his stall to find out what was going on. One day when visiting Sirius she noticed that he seemed to be acting odd but he snapped out of it within a couple minutes. That's when my mom decided to check the nanny cam and saw seizure activity. Our hearts were broken.
Sirius is apart of our family and it was not question that we were going to do everything to find out what was wrong. Our local vet quickly sprung into action and began searching for answers. After a few inconclusive tests, it was determined that Sirius was in need of a CT scan and spinal tap. Without question we decided to run the additional tests hoping that brain surgery would be ruled out and Sirius's diagnosis would be a simple one.
Our worst nightmares were realized when we received Sirius's CT results. The advanced imaging revealed a fragment with rounded margins in the Atlanta-occipital joint on the right side, with questionable second fragment adjacent. The fragment is in the fossa of the atlas (C1) and there is surrounding boney irregularity and lysis. The images were submitted to two board certified radiologists and two board certified surgeons who all felt this finding were causing Sirius's symptoms and removal is recommended.
The financial road to finding Sirius's diagnosis was a difficult one and we need your help getting him the surgery he needs. The medical team feels that surgery gives Sirius the best shot at a full recovery and life. The surgery is estimated to cost $7,000 and we will use your generous donations towards his medical bills. Sirius is such a sweet boy and my mom's best friend. He is 7 years old and still has a lot more life ahead of him. My mom spends a lot of her time not only riding him but loving him. Your support whether monetary or sharing our story means the world to us. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
