Prateek's Recovery:
Dear Friends
Your support to date is invaluable in helping Prateek and his family. Prateek is back in his home city of Toronto, fully engaged in rehabilitation at Bridgepoint hospital.
It now seems all but assured that he will regain a life of meaning and purpose. We will know the extent of his recovery in a year or so. He has much of his memory, he can speak but cannot hear, and he can walk with minimal assistance. It will be many months before we will know what sort of professional life might await Prateek, for now the focus is on the long march from death's door to a life worth living.
Thank you once again for all you continue to do to support Prateek, Swati, their daughter Arya, and the baby expected early next year.

Prateek Will Survive:
Dear Friends
I am delighted to inform you that on Day 54 in ICU fighting klebsiella meningitis, Prateek uttered his first word since falling ill. His daughter Arya's name.
This is a huge milestone in a long and slow recovery, and the first sign that he will one day emerge from his coma. There is one more major surgery ahead, to install permanent drains in his head to replace the external ones.
After that we await a year to 18 months before we will know the extent of Prateek's recovery, and his ability to earn a livelihood.
Please support his recovery if you feel able, through our extended GoFundMe campaign.

Background of Prateek's case

All of this happened very fast literally from (Monday 7/9-wed 7/11). Prateek was on vacation in New England with his extended family when he developed a high fever and became unresponsive on Jul 11, 2018 - that's when we rushed him to a local hospital in Stratton, VT. His condition was diagnosed as critical and Prateek was airlifted from Stratton to Dartmouth Hitchcock, a larger hospital in Lebanon, NH. He has been diagnosed with a rare bacterial meningitis that typically affects only post-surgical patients (those recovering from surgery). Right now, his condition is critical as the infection has caused the cerebral fluid pressure in the brain to build up. Currently, in addition to inserting 3 tubes in his brain to drain the cerebral fluid, they have put him under paralysis and induced hypothermia (cooling his body to 33 degrees) to control the pressure. Prateek is currently stable but not out of danger. Prognosis is they expect him to stay in the ICU for the next 2 weeks and he will require extended hospitalization and home care afterwards.

Prateek lives in Toronto, Canada and was in the US when he fell sick. We are unable to take him home at this point of time until his condition further improves. The funds raised will be used to cover out of pocket expenses for his family  while they stay in the area.
