Ice Warrior project fundraising for Science

**Update: The 2023 LastPole expedition has been postponed to 2024, an alternative Arctic expedition to collect scientific data will take place in January 2023**

LastPole Expedition:
Did you know there are 4 north poles, one of which, has not been reached by humankind? It’s known as the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility, the furthest point from land on the Arctic Ocean.

It stands, therefore, as the last genuine world first in polar expeditioning and in February 2024, I’m going to be part of a team taking the 800-mile journey across disintegrating sea-ice from the last landfall of Canada to the very centre of the Arctic Ocean.

So why are we doing this?
The Polar Regions have been the early indicators of climate change for over 60 years. Whist they are being modelled by NASA satellites, our ‘ground truthing’ measurements will give them a far better understanding of exactly what is happening under the snow layer and a more accurate prediction of how long the sea ice will prevail:
  • We will be furthering the knowledge of exactly how sea-ice forms and breaks up (the dynamic, mechanics and geophysics) and in so doing helped scientists more accurately predict the demise of the frozen arctic ocean.
  • We will be sampling the ocean water for pollutants, particularly plastics and documenting the number of polar bears we have encountered.
  • We will be providing “ground truth” weather data for the Met Office to help calibrate their models of polar weather.

About me:
I've always loved the outdoors (sea swimming, surfing, walking, sailing and climbing) and am looking forward to experiencing the Arctic and its challenged for the first time!

This expedition will complete a critical scientific transect of the Arctic, and since studying Oceanography at Plymouth University my awareness of climate change has increased massively.

I am hoping to spend a career in research (specifically of the polar regions) so I can learn more about them and help understand them better.
