Denise’s Fight

My name is Leah Oustrich. I grew up in Old Forge, PA with my parents and two siblings. I now live in Taylor, PA with my husband and three children. 

This year has been a mix of ups and downs for most. For my mom, Denise (Lia) Nemetz, it’s been more downs than ups. Things she never thought would happen in her lifetime have hit very close to home.

As we all know, in March the number of Covid-19 cases were rising rapidly in the United States and a quarantine was put in place across the country. In April, my son was born and with no visitors allowed at the hospital or to our house it was weeks before she able to hold him and see him in person. In May, she had a procedure scheduled that required her to go for an X-ray. Her doctor had concerns about the spots it revealed on her lungs, and put her procedure on hold until they could run more tests.

On June 8th, just when things started looking up as Pennsylvania went to “yellow phase” of quarantine, she received the news that she had Adenocarcinoma. Being diagnosed with cancer is scary enough, but being diagnosed with lung cancer during a pandemic where the virus hits those harder with a weakened immune system adds another level of fear. My mom has remained so strong throughout all of this but we all know more hardships are on the horizon. There will be growing expenses for treatments,  insurance, and every day living costs.
