PPE for Boston Healthcare Workers!

Hospitals in Boston have been running low on protective gear including masks, face shields, and gowns. BMC Need PPE is a grassroots initiative founded by Boston Medical Center physicians and staff, Boston University School of Medicine students, and Boston University alumni to ensure adequate access to personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We anticipate that BMC, one of New England’s largest safety net hospitals, will be particularly hard hit by COVID-19 since many of our patients face chronic health issues and socioeconomic obstacles that place them at a higher risk of developing complications from this disease.  Furthermore, as COVID-19 has spread, private and public demand for PPE has increased to unprecedented rates, leading to critical shortages.

While BMC has taken great efforts to proactively protect its patients and providers, it is up to us as a community to support them and ensure that front line workers have sufficient access to PPE during this critical time. As of April 1, we’ve already seen over 7,000 cases of COVID-19 in Massachusetts, and over 600 of those have been among hospital staff. It is up to us to protect our healthcare workers so that they can continue to protect us.

Thanks to you, we’ve already raised over $10,000 towards our goal, and are working closely with BMC to identify the greatest and the most reliable vendors for personal protective equipment (PPE) to supply to the front-line healthcare workers.

Every dollar counts, and every dollar will go towards purchasing supplies to send directly to our valued healthcare workers.  We plan to put the first sum of money towards N95 masks as this is the greatest need at the moment. The money will be given to the development department at BMC who will place a bulk order through their vetted and fairly priced vendors. The more money we raise, the more gear we can provide! Mercedes Powell is our representative from  BMC financial services withdrawing the funds raised!

Finally, if you have supplies to donate directly, contact us at [email redacted] or visit the BMC website (www.bmc.org/ppe ).
