POWERCHAIR EMERGENCY FUND!!!!!

Hey guys!

I’m a fellow MCAD student, and I use a powerchair for mobility (You’ve probably seen me around campus a few times, there aren’t many wheelchair users around here)! However, my powerchair is completely breaking on me. It’s not holding its charge, it starts beeping at me and not letting me move during super fun times (such as, on the bus, in the elevator, and in the middle of the road going back to the hive), and the covers on the back of the chair have broken off, exposing the wires below, among countless other issues of which become a safety hazard.

Naturally, I called my insurance company and started looking at new and used powerchairs, as they provide mobility and independence for someone like me. I got a call back from insurance, letting me know that “unfortunately my coverage doesn’t cover such expenses.” This is not the first time things like this have happened, thus I have funds saved.

However, it wasn’t anything I was expecting anytime soon. And these things are EXPENSIVE. If we’re looking at a (we are not) new standard powerchair it can easily be anywhere between $10,000-$20,000. If we’re looking at a used chair in good condition, they are often $1,000-10,000. This does not include maintenance (recommended every 3-4 years), or complications that come with the chair.

This is where I ask for your help. This is an extension of me, this chair is my legs. Without it, I lose almost all autonomy and independence. Currently, I am trying to raise a few hundred, so I can have enough to afford the cheapest working powerchair I can find. Anything helps! Thank you!
