Power Wheelchair for Chris Machado

Hello and thank you for your consideration in donating to a fund to help Chris obtain a power wheelchair. Chris is 40 years old and has suffered a permanent and rare injury resulting in him being confined to a wheelchair. Chris lives in Sahuarita, Arizona.

On August 30, 2023, Chris suffered a sudden subdural hematoma of his thoracic spinal cord. Doctors immediately ordered MRI studies of his spine. It was discovered that Chris suffered a subdural hematoma in his spinal cord resulting in paralysis below his nipple line to his legs. In the hopes of locating the cause of the hematoma, an angiogram was done but, unfortunately, no root cause of the hematoma was found. Chris did not have any prior injuries and his vascular anatomy was normal with no malformations. The doctors have stated that this injury was a spontaneous rupture. As a result of his injury, Chris is now permanently paralyzed from his chest down. Following his release from the hospital, Chris was transferred to a rehabilitation facility where Chris worked hard to strengthen his arms and shoulders. Chris will be discharged from rehab in mid-October to work on his independence and a new life. Clearly, this is a new journey for Chris which will be filled with triumphs and frustrations. If you know Chris, nothing has changed. He continues to be a charismatic and fun-loving guy. His spirit has not diminished.

This fundraiser is to purchase a power wheelchair to assist Chris in achieving independence as he wages the toughest fight of his life. The cost of a new power wheelchair is between $2,500-$5,000.
