Power Wheelchair for Buzz

I'm Tim Berry, a friend of Buzz Crawford. Buzz and I have known each other since 7th grade in Portage, MI. Our dads worked together at the GM plant in Kalamazoo. Also, Buzz and I played football together on the undefeated Portage Central JV team in 1980; well Buzzy played while I mostly watched! Anyway, he was a big, strong kid with a huge smile and was always friendly and kind to me. In the summer of '82, a little before the start of our senior football season, Buzz had a terrible swimming accident. His spinal cord was severed in his neck leaving him without the use of his arms and legs; he was suddenly transformed from a starting lineman to a quadriplegic. After years of hard work Buzz regained a fraction of functionality in his arms. Enough to get around in a wheelchair, learn to drive a highly modified van, and he was able to hold an office job for many years. In my opinion, Buzz became our class hero! Fast forward to more recent times. We've gotten older. Buzz has lost critical strength that used to allow him to have mobility. In addition, he has been battling some very bad leg, ankle, and foot injuries. These injuries can become life threatening. He explained to me that he doesn't want his legs amputated because they do help him with balance. Plus, in typical Buzz humor, he said he's grown rather attached to his legs. LOL. I believe and Buzz believes that if he could regain his mobility with a proper power wheelchair that he could get his life back. I don't say this lightly. He is basically trapped in his house, dealing with serious leg injuries, has inadequate in-home healthcare, a manual, ill-suited, uncomfortable, unstable wheelchair, all of which are physically and mentally wearing him out, stealing his happiness, and making him question whether any of this is worth continuing on for.
