The Documentary: Three years ago we met Community Leader Pastor Lorraine who lost her son to knife crime. Since then we have focussed our efforts on addressing the issues of youth violence in London. The remarkable people we’ve met during this time have formed the basis for our documentary: ‘The Power to Change’.
Knife crime has dominated headlines and news stories for the past three years. Last year alone there were 44,076 offences in England and Wales, the highest in a decade, with 71% of them being first time offenders. There are primary school children carrying knives out of fear for their own safety, and parents become afraid to let their children out.
Every life lost causes a ripple effect, touching the lives of not only the family members, but the whole community. The pain never goes away and emotional trauma is passed down through generations.
Behind every act of violence is a human being with a story; circumstances that led them to that point. These aren’t excuses, simply factors that shaped them from the day they were born.
The Power to Change documents some of these stories.
Against the backdrop of troubled childhoods, poverty, abuse, and crime, the strength of the human spirit shines through. The smallest act of kindness can turn a person’s life around, and ultimately, no matter what we’ve been through, we all have the capacity to make good choices. If people and communities come together to help and support each other, there’s no limit to what can be achieved.
Adding a unique perspective to the mix we hear from author and world-renowned speaker Prem Rawat who has dedicated his life to sharing a message of peace and giving humanity a long-needed voice.
Filming Progress
We started filming in the Summer of 2019, and everything was well on track when Covid came along. Lockdown meant we had to put plans on the back burner, but thankfully in the last two months work has resumed.
The filming should be wrapped up by the end of 2020, followed by editing and a launch in 2021!
The current pandemic, and all the fear and uncertainty it brings, has made the message of this documentary feel all the more relevant.
Funding
We need to raise £5,000 to finish filming and editing - this is a very low production budget because we have the support of skilled professionals who give their time for free or for basic expenses. However, we still have costs that need to be covered. These include the purchase of soundtracks, the hiring of interview locations, travel costs and expenses for extras, equipment hire and film licenses.
If we surpass our target, all extra raised will go towards the distribution of the documentary which will be the next phase.
Any donation, however small, is most welcome. If you can’t give, but would like to support us, then please share our fundraiser. Your support is immensely appreciated!!
Everyone who donates will be invited to screenings of the movie in 2021.
