WELCOME TO PASSION: Survival Source Material for the Betterment and Preservation of Our People! New unseen, unheard, untold stories now told, heard, seen in new innovative ways in a world in need of just that. from the mind and heart of larryjean powell.
So far with all of the money raised by larryjean powell over the past year (thank you ALL!) we have finished production on three live-audience tapings at Television City of the Three L.A. Stories that make up PASSION (The Daddy Issue, The Madame of Leimert, and Realness).
(Community enraptured by the Community Screening of "The Madame of Leimert" at WalkGoodLA on June 29th, 2025)
We have also done the a few rounds of editing on and have screened drafts of the first two stories to audiences who are deeply inspired, moved and impacted by the work! We have screened the pieces in warehouse spaces in South Park Downtown Los Angeles as well as in Mid-City at WalkGood LA and in Hollywood at The Los Angeles LGBT Center.
(Sampson McCormick warming up the audience with his genius comedy before the screening of "The Daddy Issue" at the LA LGBT Center 07/10/25)
But these aren't just ya regulah-degulah screenings. These community screenings center and hold the passion and progress we are after as a project and as a people simultaneously. These community screenings are re-imagining what it means for us to gather and what we need to feel held and be seen, truly. simply.
(Johnny Laveie moves community through a interactive piece before the screening of "The Daddy Issue" on 11/11/24 DTLA)
People are fed really good food literally and on many levels!
(larryjean’s Mamas and Aunties serving their community. some who have moved far from
home to pursue a life in the arts, some who are forced to go no-contact with their families due to them being Queer and/or Trans, some who are just in need of that balm only true homegrown community can provide.)
fellow artists and community organizers share offerings of poetry, song, and comedy before the audience gathers to view the screening.
(thee Neverending Nina ministering to the audience with her once in a lifetime gift of song before the screening of "The Daddy Issue" on 11/11/24 DTLA)
and after the screening we have post-show conversations with cast and crew moderated by just pye (a force in the journalism arena).
then, we eat together and enjoy music beautifully curated by DJ's.
(Thee DJ DarJar on the ones and twos)
since November 11th, 2024, at our community screening activations (a model larryjean has been working on for 10 years), we've had a space for the community plant literal seeds of intention as the process the films, we've had therapists offer deeper dive conversations in a separate room called "The Prayer Closet" as the rest enjoyed dancing and connecting with one another in other ways, and yes, we've even had fab photoshoots and fun exotic dancers (keeping in theme with The Madame of Leimert).
WE HAVE CENTERED A TRUE SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND GATHERING AND WILL CONTINUE TO. REIGNITING THE COLLECTIVE'S RELATIONSHIP TO THE WHY ... THE WHY IT IS VITAL TO GET UP AND GO TO HEAR/SEE/FEEL SEEN/HEARD/FELT VIA CINEMA+THEATRE ESPECIALLY.
(Catalyst Donor Sharon Lawrence + Producer Angelica Robinson at 11:11 Passion + Progress Community Screening of "The Daddy Issue" DTLA)
(Passion Tribe and Donors Johnny Laveie + Jerrie Johnson at July 10th 2025 LGBT Center Screening of "The Daddy Issue")
We've had meditation, grounding breathing, intention setting, and collective calling in a better world for us all!!
(O. Lavelle and audience follow a grounding, manifestation journey led by Jerrie Johnson at 11:11 Passion + Progress Community Screening DTLA)
Oh, and sometimes larryjean's niece Layla is roaming around passing out napkins being a helping hand to her granny (larryjean's mom) and aunties who are there serving food. you get the vibe...
(thee layla janae powell-booker! larryjean's niece being the little hostess as always)
This project is more than getting three stories that are plays, films, live-albums, and podcasts all at once.... which is a herculean feat in itself...
but PASSION is changing the way we experience stories. larryjean, with their "cine-theatre" is really innovating a new way for us all to gather and come together. supporting this is truly, truly supporting a way and path forward in these tender and tense times.
COMMUNITY | GATHERING | HEALING | THE CURE
Reaching the goal will allow for the third and last piece to be finished. The third piece: Realness (or Werk! Realness: The House of Providence) is more of a docufilm than the others. therefore, it's taking longer to cook up and needs extra resources to tape more interviews and make more edits moving forward.
Reaching the goal will also allow for:
- the audio albums to be made
- the deep dive podcast conversations about the work and themes therein to also be made
- more community screening activations to happen,
- the PR/Marketing rockstar to help us properly position the project in a way that is marketably viable and fierce.
(larryjean with their other mother Robin Lewis + one and only birth mom ShanCares serving post-screening cake at WalkGood LA Community Screening on June 29th, 2025)
(The WalkGoodLA Community Screening at a birthday theme to it as it happened on June 29th, 2025 and larryjean's bday is June 30th. Shancares, larryjean's mom asked them, "what should i put on the bday cake i'm bringing?" ... "grateful" was larryjean's response.)

Welcome to PASSION: Survival Source Material for the Preservation and Betterment of Our People
THREE STORIES LIVE AUDIO/VIDEO RECORDED JULY 1ST-3RD, 2024 IN LA AT THE LEGENDARY TELEVISION CITY!!
(Byron Coolie, Devere Rogers, larryjean, Roger Q. Mason, and Sidney Edwards in action at Television City in Los Angeles during rehearsals for "The Madame of Leimert" live recording July 2024)
The Mission
PASSION is about more than storytelling; it’s about offering a community and network to listeners who may feel alone and without a space where they can find belonging. Our project brings top-of-the-line storytelling with brilliant artists and changemakers discussing the work. Most of these artists are accessible on social media and beyond, providing connections and support for Black queer and/or trans gnc humans, giving them reasons to stay, live, survive, and thrive in a world that often marginalizes and quite literally seeks to erase us.
(Charles Reese in action as Charles Jackson during "The Madame of Leimert" Television City Recording rehearsals July 2024)
The Vision
PASSION is a new model for storytellers to share their stories without waiting for traditional opportunities. This project lives at the innovative intersection of theatre, film, and digital media, creating CRAZY impact on multiple levels.
(Greg Wilson, Armand Fields, Galen J. Williams, Rome Woods, Byron Keaton, larryjean, Justin Sams! LA BALLROOM COMMUNITY + LA PASSION RECORDING CAST OF REALNESS at The New Los Angeles Theatre Center June 2024)
Over a powerful one-week process, we rehearsed, performed, and audio recorded three readings of larryjean's (fka Larry Powell) compelling multi-medium plays: Realness, The Daddy Issue, and The Madame of Leimert. We also filmed the process as a documentary and the performances as live spoken word specials, all to be distributed across various platforms.
(producer/DP and all around PASSION tribe Samia Zaidi in action)
With up to five cameras at a time operated by high-level, award-winning cinematographers, top-of-the-line recording microphones, and support from Television City personnel, we captured both the audio and visual essence of these stories. All in front of a live audience!! This will eventually be released as a live album with jaw-dropping feature-length visuals/docufilms that tell the story beyond what the audio can convey. The podcast featuring thought leaders and culture bearers will run alongside the stories, offering a community and network for listeners who may feel isolated. Do you see the many ways the world will have the opportunity to experience this work?
